How to make a short film in 48 hours

How to make a short film-03

Workshop Facilitator: David Overmars

Workshop Description

This workshop is designed to prepare participants for the fast-paced CANZ 48 Hour Film Challenge, where teams must write, shoot, and edit a short film in a single weekend.

Creating a film in 48 hours is less about perfection and more about momentum, creativity, and adaptability. In this session, we’ll explore practical strategies that help teams move quickly from idea to finished film while embracing the unpredictable nature of the challenge.

Participants will learn how to develop a simple story outline, plan a realistic production schedule, and make the most of the resources available to them. We’ll also discuss how to stay flexible when things inevitably go off script. In a 48-hour challenge, problems are part of the process. When something unexpected happens, the key is learning how to adapt and keep moving forward.

This workshop will help you find the balance between having a clear plan and being ready to improvise when the moment demands it. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and get advice on preparing your team for the challenge.

Whether you’re participating in the CANZ Film Challenge or simply curious about fast-paced filmmaking, this session will give you the tools, mindset, and confidence to create a film under pressure and have fun doing it.
