Writing a No-Budget Short Film

POSTERS-01

Workshop Facilitator: David Overmars

Workshop Description

Have a story idea but not sure how to turn it into something you can actually film? This workshop focuses on writing simple, practical short films (7 minutes or less) that can be produced with little to no budget.

Together we’ll explore how to build stories around the resources you already have—locations, props, actors, and environments available to you right now. Instead of imagining large-scale scenes that require huge crews or special effects, we’ll focus on ideas that can confidently be filmed in a single weekend with a small team.

This workshop is perfect for first-time writers, filmmakers, and anyone curious about storytelling for the screen. The goal is to give you the confidence to write something you can bring to life.

Participants who have signed up for the CANZ 48 Hour Film Challenge are welcome to develop their ideas during the workshop, but the session is also open to anyone who simply wants to learn how accessible filmmaking can be.

You can take the workshop just for fun, or use it as a starting point to turn your story into a real film.

With a new Antigonish film festival launching this fall, there has never been a better time to start creating.

Your story could be the next one on the screen.
